The Iceni welcomed in the New Year with a try-fest playing their Suffolk rivals Woodbridge.
On a wet afternoon they scored an unanswered 10 tries with 9 of them converted. Coach Graham Seal thought the Iceni took a while to adapt to the conditions but once they had, it was one way traffic.
Special mention must go to centre,Yas Amber and No. 8 Katie Gemal, who between them converted all but one of the tries with the missed effort bouncing off the post!
Woodbridge kicked off and before long the Iceni were awarded a penalty. The ball was moved to Yas, who made ground before passing to fly-half Emma Goate for the first score.
Woodbridge restarted and there followed a half hour of energetic play with both sides trying to deal with the slippery ball and wet conditions.
Iceni’s scrum was dominant throughout; however when the Iceni realised they only had to move the ball swiftly to their fast runners to gain momentum, they broke through the Woodbridge defence at will.
Following a successful line out in their half, Iceni passed the ball to scrum half, Jade Baker who linked well to Zoe Goate, who sped upfield, passed to wing Kiera Chittenden who ran 50 meters to score a brilliant try . 14-0 and the Iceni were in the ascendancy.
5 minutes later Beth Watts piled over the try line after some strong running. Just before half-time an excellent move involving Beth, Jade & Zoe led to the latter bringing the half-time score to 28-0.
Wise words from coaches Seal & Whiteman galvanised the Iceni, who certainly upped their game in the second half. Several times the Iceni attacked the Woodbridge defence much to the delight of their supporters. Within minutes of the Colchester restart one such charge resulted in flanker Kat Richardson touching down close to the posts.
Not long after Zoe finished off a good move by the backs bringing the score to 42-0. Woodbridge were now struggling as they had lost 2 players to injury and were down to 11 players and the referee decided that the scrums would be uncontested.
Woodbridge restarted and Iceni moved the ball through swift hands; the backs moved the ball up the pitch and Kat dived over for her second try.
To their credit, Woodbridge did their best to turn the tide but to no avail. Before long Yas broke away down the left and moved the ball quickly to the right for fullback Gracie Besant to finish the move, resulting in another try.
Later the Iceni had a scrum on their own 22 metre line and Jade quickly moved the ball right to fullback Anna Fox who sprinted through the tiring defence to score a fine try.
Moments later Emma scored her second try resulting in Iceni’s superb score 68-0 with 20 minutes to go. However another Woodbridge player was injured and the referee, after speaking to both Captains, called time on the game.
Players, coaches and supporters of the Iceni were jubilant at this great display of running rugby.
Player of the Match, sponsored by Tru7 , was Jade Baker and the Under the Radar award went to Maddie Seal.
