Topping the bill for Colchester rugby on Saturday was Joe McMillan – the latest stalwart to hit an extraordinary 250 appearances for his hometown club.
Joe led out the team in the match against Oundle to a rapturous reception from the Colchester fans, who were quick to pay tribute to a player who had given his all to the club from an early age.
A confirmed member of the front row club, Joe has readily switched between hooker and prop, and his “commentary” on matches has raised many a smile from referees who have been ready to accept his banter.
Joe admits he didn’t expect to reach such a landmark.
“I’ve played with some fantastic players in my time. Ever since I was a young boy I’ve been at this club, since I was 10 years old. It’s just so pleasing that I can get towards the twilight of my career with so many boys that I started with.
“It’s a real honour, a real pleasure, I love Colchester Rugby Club and when I’m all done, I’ll miss it.
Club president Keiran Payne rightly gave him the big build-up on leading the team out.
“That made me extremely proud. I brought my young son Hugo with me, and my partner Amy gave him to me to carry. It was just a lovely moment.
“I’ve had a lovely day so from the bottom of my heart I just want to thank everyone at the club, I’ll love you always and I’ll always be here.”
Of course, it helped that Colchester fought back to win the match.
“It’s been a huge occasion. They really put in a shift against us and at times we were under a bit of pressure, but I had confidence in the boys that we would always do it.”
