Match Report : Colchester Iceni 5 Ipswich Scorpions 30

Doug Boulton19 Mar - 09:47

Report by Steve Whiteman

Due to match cancelations the Iceni had not had a match for 8 weeks and were up against a powerful and well-drilled Ipswich side who proved to be too good for the Colchester women. Try as they may the Iceni could not match the strength of the Suffolk women and went down by 6 tries to 1 none of which were converted.
The visitors score could have been much higher but for the admirable defensive efforts of the women in black. The Iceni started well when following their kick off they pressed forward and No.8 Katie Gemal burst through the defence to touch down a good try.
From the restart the Scorpions pressed forward but knocked the ball on. However they turned over the resultant Colchester scrum and moved the ball swiftly to the right to score their first try. With the score even at 5-5 Iceni’s kick off failed to go 10 metres and Ipswich were awarded a scrum on the centre spot. The visitors then repeatedly attacked the host’s line but determined tackling by the Iceni kept them from scoring again. However eventually the sustained pressure led to the visitors earning a penalty 5 metres from the host’s posts. The won ball was moved swiftly out left for their centre to score putting Scorpions in the lead 5-10.
Despite the best efforts of the Iceni for the rest of the half the Scorpions added another score just before half time. Coach Danny Whiteman replaced Alli Morris with Yas Amber, back from injury at the interval and the match proceeded. The visitors raised their game and scored a further 3 tries in the second half using their well drilled forwards to get the ball out to their fast running wings and fullback. Unfortunately Colchester’s leading try scorer Chloe Mills was injured in a tackle and had to leave the pitch.
Perhaps the last score summed up the game when following a Colchester penalty the visitor’s got possession of the ball and their rapid fullback ran 50 metres to score an excellent try to seal the win.
Coach Graham Seal was disappointed in the result but praised the Iceni for never giving up the fight for the whole 80 minutes. Woman of the Match was scrum half Jess Brennan for her tireless efforts behind the forwards and the Under the Radar award went to flanker Emma Goate for her huge effort too.
