Saturday preview: Col aiming for a double against Oaks

Colchester entertain Sevenoaks at Raven Park on Saturday (kick-off 3pm) aiming for a home and away double after their victory over the Kent side earlier in the season.

The Blacks will be hoping to build on their recent upturn in results, with 11 points harvested from their last three fixtures, including two bonus point victories against teams in the top half of the table.

Particularly pleasing was last week’s 45-41 home win over Westcombe Park, Cam Kerr’s last-minute try earning a thrilling victory.

With two teams relegated from Nat 2 East, and the bottom four sides all playing on another in the closing weeks of the season, there is still all to play for.

Colchester are second bottom of the table on 30 points, 10 points behind Sevenoaks and Havant, who Colchester visit in their penultimate game of the season. The Blacks are four points ahead of bottom side Worthing, with the two teams meeting a week on Saturday.

Sevenoaks – who Colchester beat 28-23 in November - have won seven and lost 14 matches this season, their last outing seeing them lose 27-5 at home to promotion-chasing Dorking.

“They’re the same as us,” said interim head coach Mike Haywood. “They’re battling it out at the bottom of the table at the moment.

“We know it’s going to be a challenge. They’re going to want to come to our place and create an upset, so for us, again, we’ve just got to make sure we’re on it from the off.”

To add to the occasion at Raven Park on Saturday, the colts’ teams from Colchester and Sevenoaks will play a curtain-raiser on the main pitch at 12.30.

It’s a rest weekend in terms of league action for the club’s other men’s teams, but the 4s are in home friendly action against Witham 2s (kick-off TBC – check the club’s social media channels for details nearer the time).

It is, of course, also Super Saturday in the 6 Nations, with England’s match against Wales in Cardiff kicking off at 4.45 so why not stay after the first team match and watch the action on the big screens in the bar?
